The prefect system at St John’s was introduced in 1908 when Rev. Jacob Thompson was the Principal. The system has a hierarchical structure of Monitors, Prefects, Deputy Senior Prefect, and the Senior Prefect. The purpose of the system has been “to train the senior students at the College in leadership, and to advance the cause of discipline.” The prefect system has been able to be true to its dual goal of developing student leadership qualities while assisting the College in sustaining discipline. Over the years, this system was gradually extended respectively to the Senior Secondary (Grade 10 & 11), Junior Secondary (Grade 8 & 9), Middle School (grade 6 & 7), and the Primary School (Grade 1 – 5). The appointment to this prestigious position is done following a system of voting by the Principal, Vice Principal, teachers, and the senior students. The prerequisites for the appointment as determined by the College are integrity and behaviour reflecting the Vision of the College, academic excellence, achievements in sports and/or games, and involvement in co-curricular activities. The Prefects’ Centenary was celebrated in May 2008. It was a grand celebration, which was attended by the present and many past prefects to commemorate the centenary in gratitude to our Alma Mater.
